Lacquer box «Forest gifts», Dmitrieva, paper-mache, tempera, Kholui

This exquisite lacquer box is made in traditional technique of Russian miniature painting by professional artist.

All the steps of creating from the beginning to the final touches are hand made. Egg tempera paints of bright colours used in the work: rich red, blue and green are harmoniously combined with golden and orange details. Traditionally, the painting is made in a strict sequence: firstly, the base is primed and then varnished. Certain elements are decorated with gold leaf.

Kholui miniature school appeared in the Kholui village of Ivanovskaya oblast’ in 1934. This type of art was based on the icon-painting craft.The figurative language of the Kholui miniatures dates back to the methods of Old Russian painting. However, the characters depicted on the miniatures of this school are more realistic.
