«Mikhailovskiy Palace» Kokareva I, papier-mâché, tempera, Kholui

Large and roomy lacquer box, made of papier-mâché and hand painted with tempera by professional artist. She is a representative of the Kholui school, where the boxes have often depictions of cities and buildings. Mikhailovskiy castle – is one of the most mystical and unusual places of Saint-Petersburg. It was built in the heart of the city as the residence for Emperor Paul I where he died. Other famous buildings such as the Church on spilled blood, Isaac’s Cathedral and Peter and Paul’s fortress are also depicted on the box.

The artistic language of the Kholui miniature painting goes back to the Old Russian painting. The stages of creating include priming of the box, painting with tempera and covering with lacquer.
