Bell Winter, Kritova, papier-mâché, tempera, Palekh, 2015

Lacquer miniature artists create their masterpieces not only on boxes, but also on other papier-mâché articles. This wonderful painted bell was made by professional artist of the Palekh lacquer miniature school. Painting on such a surface is more complicated and needs a lot of skills.

The Palekh miniatures usually represent characters from real life, literary works, fairy tales, bylinas and songs. Traditionally, they are painted with local bright paints over the black background and are known for their delicate and smooth design, abundance of golden shading, and accurate silhouettes of flattened figures. Russian troika is one of the classical Russian episodes which often appears in art.

Back in the days Palekh was famous for its icon painting. After the Revolution of 1917 artists tried to find the way of self-expression. So an amazing lacquer miniature painting appeared as a great part of Russian handicraft.

In 1925 Palekh artists exhibited their works on the World exhibition in Paris.

Size: 7,6cm high, 5cm long and 5,1cm wide.
