«In the forest», Scalozub A., papier-mâché, tempera, Palekh

Back in the days Palekh was famous for its icon painting. After the Revolution of 1917 artists tried to find the way of self-expression. So an amazing lacquer miniature painting appeared as a great part of Russian handicraft. In 1925 Palekh artists exhibited their works on the World exhibition in Paris.

The Palekh miniatures usually represent characters from real life, literary works, fairy tales, bylinas and songs. Traditionally, they are painted with local bright paints over the black background and are known for their delicate and smooth design, abundance of golden shading, and accurate silhouettes of flattened figures.
